Tips for Childproofing your home

As parents to little ones, it is important to protect them from the many dangers they can face in life. However, many overlook one of the main places childhood accidents can often occur – their own home. According to experts, around 2.5 million children are hurt or injured by home hazards each year. September is Baby Safety Month, and we here at Custom Electrical want to remind you of the many ways of childproofing your home.

4 Tips for Childproofing Your Home

  1. In the Kitchen
  • Keep pot handles facing the back of the stove.
  • Make sure the oven is locked (whether using or not)
  • Keep your baby away from the stove while cooking
  • Don’t place breakable items, knives and heavy pots in reach of your child
  • Make sure your child’s highchair is stable and sturdy. Don’t forget to strap them in tight!
  1. In the Bathrooms
  • Have non-slip mats at the bottom of your tub to prevent sliding or falls from your baby.
  • Cover up all bathtub knobs
  • Keep the water at a reasonable temperature (96-100 degrees) to avoid burning your baby’s skin.
  • Always have an eye on your baby. NEVER leave them unattended.
  • Don’t overfill the tub when bathing your child
  1. In the Play Area
  • Keep outlets covered to keep your baby from exploring them
  • Doorstops help to protect your child’s fingers
  • Keep electrical cords out of sight – and out of reach!
  • If your play area is near a stairway, make sure to install a safety gate at the top and bottom
  • Toys smaller than 1 inches are a potential choking hazard. Keep them out of reach until your child is grade school age
  • Keep electrical cords hidden and out of view
  1. Other Places in the House
  • Never leave your baby unattended when using the changing table and make sure to use the safety strap
  • Keep toiletries out of reach of your baby
  • Fireplaces are beautiful but can be dangerous. Make sure yours in covered by a screen – and never leave your child by a fireplace unattended
  • Make sure your furniture has corner and edge bumpers so that your infant doesn’t bump their head while learning to walk
  • Childproofing your home is important, so don’t wait until the last minute to take care of it. For more helpful hints or information on childproofing your outlets, call Custom Electrical today!
