Getting Ready for the School Year

getting ready for the school year

Back to school can be a hectic time of year for both parents and students. Whether you have a little tyke going to kindergarten, or a teenager off to college, there is a lot to be done. We’ve gathered some organization and home tips to make the transition from summer to fall a smoother one in your household.

Get on a New Schedule

Before the school bell rings, the alarm clock goes off. Prepare your students early by gradually waking them up earlier and earlier each day. When the first day of school comes, it won’t be such a shock getting out of bed!

Know the Limitations of your Circuit Breaker

The last thing you need in the morning is your daughter’s hair dryer blowing a fuse before work and school. This requires resetting the breaker – then everyone is running late! Check your outlets now, to be sure they can handle the wattage of the hairdryer or other appliances in use on a daily basis. In the past, hairdryers were a lower wattage, but have since become extremely powerful. If you have an older home but a newer hairdryer, they may not be compatible. Call Custom Electrical Service to make sure your breaker is up to code!

Organize Your Family Calendar

Before the madness of after school activities start, write down the activities of each family member on a calendar and hang it on the fridge or other “public space.” Make it easier by using different colors for different family members! Don’t forget to plan for home maintenance such as testing your electrical and GFCI outlets!

Test Your Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors

Your smoke and CO detectors should be tested at least once a month, and replaced every 5-10 years. With your kids in and out of the house during back to school season, don’t forget to check this month! While we agree it’s best to avoid electrical fires to begin with, your smoke and CO alarms are a necessary protective measure for your family.

Save Time and Energy

Back to school shopping can be hectic, so plan ahead with a list, and stick to it! You’ll save time and precious parenting energy! Another way to save energy this back to school season is making sure you turn off the lights before you leave for the day. Keep all electronics not in use, such as a computer or the television, powered down or unplugged.

Back to school season doesn’t have to be crazy. Our tips can keep your home and family organized and prepared for anything this fall!
