If they aren’t already, lemons should be the one food item that is always on your grocery list. Not only are they great for flavoring water and cooking, they can save you money on cleaning products. Since lemons have an extremely low pH level, their acidity makes them great for sanitizing. The citric acid also adds a wonderful aroma around your home with the added benefit of being all natural. Read on to see our favorite ways to clean your home with a lemon.

Metals

Lemons can help clean brass, copper, chrome and other metals. With enough of them, you can even clean your car! To clean with a lemon, first cut it in half. Next add salt for friction and test a small area. Then you can scrub away until your metals are clean!

Cooking Stains

Scrub a laminent counter or cutting board with diluted lemon juice to remove cooking stains. For the counter, add lemon juice and water into a spray bottle, spray the counter and wipe clean. Removing stains from a cutting board will also require some elbow grease. Rub mixture into the stain and let it sit to lift.

Cleaning your microwave with lemons is simple: Fill a microwave-safe cup with water about ¾ of the way. Next add a couple tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice. It isn’t an exact science, so the best way to judge is by the size of your glass. Start the microwave for a few minutes or until the water boils. Leave the cup inside the closed microwave for at least 10 mins, then wipe the inside clean.

Garbage Disposal

If your garbage disposal has seen better days, it can be sanitized easily with lemon peels and hot water. Toss a few in the disposal and run the water until it’s hot. Turn on the disposal until the peels are gone. Your disposal will be cleaner and smell much better.

All Purpose Cleaner

Another household item that has great cleaning power is vinegar. Combine it with lemon and your natural cleaner is ready for anything you throw at it (or spill accidentally). According to Kitchn, if you allow your citrus peels to sit in vinegar the oils and scent from the fruit mixes with the vinegar leaving you with a more powerful and better smelling product.
