Tips for Saving Money on Electricity this Summer

Thanks to summer break, your kids now spend their days watching TV and playing video games. The A/C is working overtime to cool down your house while the lights, appliances and water fixtures get extra use as well. Summer is ostensibly a season for fun – until you receive that energy bill. Normally, it’s something you were comfortable with, but the excess power usage made the cost skyrocket. The kids deserve the vacation, but do you deserve the higher bill? Of course not!

A homeowner knows when a bill is too much, and Custom Electrical Services knows a few ways to reduce it. We asked our expert technicians to provide tips on cutting down the energy bill and saving money on electricity this summer.

Use Fans and Low Power Cooling

  • Air conditioning during the summer is essential, but using it constantly drives up the utility bill.
  • Personal fans give you a refreshing breeze throughout your day without using a lot of energy.
  • Use a ceiling fan to cool down entire rooms without fattening up the energy bill.
  • Evaporative coolers can cut down tremendously on A/C usage, and their energy efficient designs consume only 25% as much power.

Turn Off Power When Not in Use

  • One of the simplest ways to save energy is turning off power when idle.
  • Turn off your computer as soon as you’re done to stop power consumption.
  • Turn lights off when you are the last one to leave a room.
  • Unplug electronics from your walls when fully charged or not in use.

Inspect Your A/C System

  • If you’re not using your A/C as much, but energy costs are still high, then there may be a problem with your HVAC system.
  • Have a professional technician diagnose the problem with your A/C, and stop losing money from a malfunctioning system.
  • In general, you should get an HVAC inspection at least once a year.

Go Outside

  • The outdoors can be your natural A/C. In the morning when it’s cool – open the windows or take the family out for a walk.
  • Turn off as much electricity as possible when leaving the house.
  • Trading indoor cooling for a pool, water park or lake is a great way to save money and have family fun.

Use Energy Efficient Appliances

  • Your own appliances can take a toll on the bill, why not find some alternatives?
  • Use microwaves and portable grills instead of your stove and oven.
  • Hang up your clothes after washing them instead of putting them in the dryer.
  • Replace your light bulbs with Energy Star certified bulbs for maximum energy efficiency.
